Well, what can I say? Another year gone. My New Year's Resolution is just to keep reading, keep thinking, keep listening, keep learning.

I want to thank Cynthia and Jeff for responding to my posts all the time. I really love hearing from you guys. Even when we disagree (Jeff, I'm looking in your direction).

And for everyone else, please keep in touch. I miss you guys. Happy New Year.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY STACY!

50 Things To Eat Before You Die

We've been checking out the night sky recently because there is a comet you are supposed to be able to see at this time of year, but Simon called me out last night because you could see satellites travelling across the sky. It was fascinating.

It's cool where we live, because I can actually see the Milky Way, and tell that planets are different colors. It's pretty amazing.

Oh, and I saw an eel yesterday in the creek in front of our house. A big one.

Boxing Day - don't ask me what it is, I don't know. Oh wait, someone does. But is the division of classes a good reason for a holiday?

Adios Johnny Oates

As someone who's been there, let's heed what Martha has to say about prison reform.

Interesting read for the liberal

It's so luxurious to have more than two days off in a row. We get Monday and Tuesday off since Christmas and Boxing Day land on the weekend.

We made stew and Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cakes for our Christmas dins - it was good.

Dudes, I just looked out the window, and there is a giant rainbow going across the whole sky - now it's slowly disappearing - nature is cool.

My employer gave all of us these really nice travel bags (they even have wheels). Inside we got an emergency car kit including jumper cables, gloves, temporary windshield and a whole set of tools, all in a little emergency triangle case. We also got a first aid kit, a puzzle, a beach ball, and a frisbee. The CEO of the company then came out and shook all of our hands and told us Merry Christmas. I thought it was a pretty good gift.

Give A Little Bit

Movie: Jackass The Movie, Anger Management, Coffy

Whew, it's winter again here, so annoying! Luckily, we got a slow cooker on a reward program, and my first attempt was Creamy Tomato and Lentil soup. It's good - Simon said it's the best thing I've ever cooked. So we had soup and built a fire last night - just like December back home!

Speaking of spiky, how is this girl supposed to cut out construction paper for art class if she doesn't have any scissors? Is this common all over, no scissors in class?

For crying out loud, hasn't this man done his time?

You know, why is it always Jesus or Mary that shows up as an image? Maybe it's just some guy named Larry. Or a woman named Beryl.

How About You?

Movie: The Last Days of Disco

Well, last week was a pretty big week:

NZ released a refugee on bail after holding him for two years because they can't agree if he is a terrorist or not.

NZ passed the Civil Union Bill, which will allow couples (gay or straight) to enter into a civil union instead of a marriage.

I had my first cappuccino.

I found out this product called Dairy Food is pudding. I can have pudding again!

We said adios to Dimebag Darrell Abbott (warning: sound) who was tragically killed.

And should have said Happy Anniversay to Terri and Eric on the 9th, and Stacy and James on the 10th.

Did I miss anything?

Who Invented The Zipper?

JACK: "Thought for the day: Though the eyes are the windows to your soul, the zipper is the window to your underwear." - Will & Grace

Is This American?

See the "controversial" ad

At lunch today I was at a bakery checking out the sandwiches, and I heard a woman ask if she could exchange her sandwich as hers had egg in it or something, so out of the corner of my eye I see her coming my way, and I'm getting ready to step back when I realize she isn't going to say excuse me or even look at me, even though she is heading right toward me and you can't miss me. I mean, I'm a customer too. So I just stand there and let her trip all over my giant feet. She just goes "oh sorry" and keeps on getting a new sandwich. I tell ya, I may rag on Texas a lot, but in terms of politeness and manners and couth, it wins hands down. Sheesh.

I've Been Everywhere Man

Hmmmm, so we must protect "free speech, women's rights and individual dignity" but not free speech, gay rights and individual dignity?

Do we live in the information age or not? Why all the bullshit?

So I had taken off today just because everyone else in my department is about to take off except me, but I needed to get something notarized and FedExed back to the States, so I rode into work with Simon thinking I can just pop over to the US Embassy and get my document notarized. Wrong. Here's a tip for you - consulate and embassy - not the same thing. Consulate, which notarizes documents, is in Auckland. So I have to run back over to Simon's office, get on the net, and find a lawyer who will notarize this for me - in NZ, lawyers and solicitors are the notaries, not just any old joe - I mean, I used to be a notary.

So the lawyer has time to notarize my document, I go to his office, and the first thing he says to me is "I'll only agree to do this if you are not a Bush supporter." No lie. We laugh, and he says "Do you fulfill my requirements?" and I'm like "Yes, no Bush supporter here." We then proceed to discuss the US for a while and agree I'm probably better off in NZ right now, I get my document notarized and head on out - to the airport, which is the only FedEx counter in town.

I catch the bus out to the airport. I love riding the bus if I'm not too constrained by time as you get to people watch. You also get to see shops and restaurants that you might not have seen before if you were driving.

Anyway, get out to the airport, find out how to get out to the FedEx counter - not at the airport, at the Air New Zealand Cargo building. It was a beautiful sunny day, but out by the airport the wind was whipping around something fierce. So get my documents dropped off, go back to the airport, have some really bad butter chicken (which I only spilled a tiny bit on myself-a miracle) while relaxing a bit watching planes take off and the waves hit the beach, saw an octopus (octopi are cool), found out where to catch the bus again, talked to some dudes also waiting on the bus for a little bit, got on the bus with my favorite bus driver - he yells at people all the time and drives really fast - we went through a long tunnel and I thought it was going to turn into the freak-out from Willie Wonka, he was going so fast. Head back through Wellington, Lower Hutt, finally into Upper Hutt, where I have to catch another bus, luckily it was only a 15 minute wait. Get off at my stop, buy an ice cream at the dairy (hey, I walked around plenty today) and walked on home.

My dogs are barkin'. I think I'll sleep pretty good tonight.

Gee, I wonder who's next after they call up all the old people?

I saw a couple making out in the produce section of the supermarket yesterday. Not a young couple, either. ??? I would prefer people to make out in the toilet paper aisle or something, not with the fresh fruit and vege.
