This morning we were getting ready to leave, and Simon yells, "quick, come here!" I run over to the back door, and there is a duck! It's talking to us, and trying to come in the house (sorry no pic, it all happened to fast). I wasn't going to feed it, but it wasn't moving, so I told Simon to go get some bread (I know it's bad for ducks, but we had to get going and it was the nearest thing). But once Simon went to get the bread out, Cassie got suspicious - why were we trying to sneak bread out? Simon threw the bread out in the backyard, and we locked the door - forgetting that we had installed a new dog door, and Cassie could get out anyway. Simon picked up the bread and tried to get the duck to follow him to the front yard, but no luck - the duck was just walking around the backyard, even when Cassie did come out. Simon threw the bread in the front yard and I shut the back gate. Cassie looked at us suspiciously again because she knew the bread was in the front yard, then she turned around and chased the duck out of the backyard. We left but were afraid Cassie would somehow get out of the backyard to get the bread in the front yard (it's sort of happened before) but she didn't (or maybe she did, the bread was gone when we got back).
Hey, need to order a book? If you order it from GoodBooksNZ, all the profits go to Oxfam. That's right, ALL the profits. AND, they have free shipping, and I just ordered a book and the price was cheaper than another NZ online retailer. They deliver worldwide. Try it, it's easy.
And to help you find a book, check out enCompass - it's a cool little book site.
We felt this at work today. I haven't been through an earthquake at these offices until today, and I have to say I didn't really care for it. There was a small rumble, we all asked "did you feel that?" then the building really started swaying. It probably only swayed for about a minute, but it felt like forever. I was almost starting to get a little panicky, but luckily it stopped. Whew!
Oh man, I made THE WORST Beef Stroganoff tonight. It was truly horrible, and it was supposed to be for two nights but I don't think so - I think we'll have something else tomorrow night. Only Cassie liked it, and she has been sick and hasn't had very much food lately so I think she would have eaten anything.
We are supposed to dance and drum tomorrow night at a school gala in Upper Hutt, but it is raining now, it is supposed to be still raining then, so I don't know. I'm still taking half a day off tomorrow - hey, it's Friday and I have a gig - I pretty much have to!
Robin Recommends Emergency Sex - And Other Desperate Measures - You know, I didn't really start keeping up with world events until about five years ago, so this book was a good read for me as it deals with events from the nineties. Cambodia, Haiti, Somalia, Bosnia. It's incredibly heartbreaking to read about what human beings did (and still do) to other human beings, but it's also a story about friendship and love, and how important that is in today's world.
So don't you hate it when you are about to have a morning tea for a goal that was met, and someone comes up (who wasn't involved in this goal by the way, but is just on our team, I'm not sure why they were even invited, frankly), looks at the food, and starts talking about how they can't eat anything because they have set a goal to lose X amount before X, and they keep going on and on about when they can eat and what they can eat and when they are going to exercise...you know, f*&% off! If you can't put some food in your mouth to shut yourself up, then just get out - no one really wants to know!
So, I've been sick this week and took a couple of days off work, and I go back after those two days because if you are off three days you have to get a doctor's note, and I know it's just a cold so I go back to work Thursday, which is very cold and rainy, and what happens? We have a fire alarm at work. So I have to walk down five flights of stairs, then we are supposed to meet in this parking lot, but I walk past all the fire trucks and the firemen are just standing around, there's no emergency, (there wasn't, it was a toaster which smokes a lot and I think they have finally confiscated it as this is not the first time this has happened) and like I said it was raining, so I don't go meet in the parking lot - I stand under this shelter by the big auditorium next door to work, along with most other smart people. They asked me where I was later and if I knew where to meet and I'm like yes, I just didn't want to get wet as I'm still sick. Now I can barely walk because my calves are so tight, which I wouldn't think they would be because I do go up and down the stairs every day and also we dance on our toes a lot but I guess not enough.
On a happier note, I have finished my school for this term and don't have to worry about it anymore until February - hooray!
So, there was a tiny controvery here over a direct mail marketing campaign by a national pizza chain. (Check out the pic with the article - the woman can barely hold the condom - and look at her face!) Anyway, I'm so tired of some religious types hijacking the fun and enjoyment people get out of sex and making safe sex (and people that practice it) sound evil and disgusting. Married people use condoms too, Mr. Lane. And tell me, what is legitimate lovemaking?
People, it's OK to have sex, and it's even better when you are protected. It's being a responsible citizen of planet Earth to use condoms and other forms of birth control to prevent unwanted pregnancy and disease. Have a healthy family when you are ready.
Now to lighten the mood, here is another commercial from New Zealand starting up again lately for Trumpet ice cream - check out the woman on the bus, she is perfect!
I wonder how many complaints that commercial got?
Adios William Styron. Sophie's Choice and The Confessions of Nat Turner are two books I continue to think about, long after I read them.
...but Movember is here - you guys know how much I like a nice stache, so I'm looking forward to this month. A couple of guys in my office are doing it, and I'm sure I'll spot more along the way.
I know I've been flogging YouTube to death, but since "the man" is about to ruin it, MySpace, and anything else remotely cool and fun, I'm going to keep selecting treats for your viewing pleasure.
First up - a HI-LARIOUS commercial from NZ - since it's "almost summer" here (I've got a heater going on my feet right now - yay summer!) this commercial has recently started up again - we laugh every time.
KK tried some L & P while she was here - I don't think she liked it. : ) Simon likes to mix L & P and Southern Comfort.
