06/24/2008: "Adios Cassie 1995-2008"

Our dog Cassie (Cassandra) passed away this morning on the way to the vet. She was 13 years old.

We got Cassie a couple of months after we moved into our house. A friend of Simon's needed a place for his parent's dog to stay while they were dealing with some stuff, so we agreed to keep her. After a bit of time the friend said she could stay with us.

We almost thought we had lost her that first day. We didn't have a fenced yard, and weren't quite used to dealing with a dog. We couldn't find her, but she finally turned up back in our car. She had jumped through the window. She had a horrible whine that first day too, as she never liked change, but we bought her a squeaky toy and that stopped the whining (though not the squeaking, but believe me, the squeaking was better than the whining).

She soon got used to us and to having the run of the house. She never could get enough petting, but she sure tried. She was a very good dog and really only tore one thing up, a pair of Simon's goggles. We are not sure why she felt the need to demolish them, but I guess she had her reasons.

She was an excellent timekeeper, and would let me know when it was time for dinner and for her snacks. She would even grumble at me when I had not started our dinner at the usual time! She liked her food, except citrus fruit. She always thought she liked citrus fruit, but then realized she didn't.

She didn't like other dogs except a few, which made going anywhere with her a nightmare, so she didn't get to go that many places. That suited her pretty good, except she did like to go for walks, to sniff everything that was out there. Even when she could barely walk at the end, she would try to run when I took her down to the letterbox, but she would come limping back.

She went downhill pretty fast these last few months, but I think she lived a pretty good life, and we sure will miss her.

Bye Cassie.

Cassie

I am always so sad at the passing of a dog. We have been through so many the last few years and it never gets easier. I am glad you were there for her.

A great book to read now is "Dog Heaven" by Cynthia Rylant. It will be in the children's section. I love it and when I get sad thinking about my dogs, I read it.

It is just so painful, and you can't take bereavement leave for your pets, or at least not here you can't, so you just have to go to work and try not to cry.

No bereavement leave for pets at my job, either and it really, really sucks.

Robin and Simon,

I'm so sorry to hear about Cassie. She was a great dog and you two were great to take her in when you did.

Love to you two,

Mom
